Buying a puppy

A perfect puppybuyer

It is important that the puppies end up in a home with a genuine interest in the breed and a desire to learn.

A good puppy buyer is someone who:

  • lives in a way that suits a TM.
  • has a lifestyle with a farm or property to guard.
  • has learned a lot about the breed in advance.
  • is strong, stubborn, patient and understands how to show a 1,000-year-old Tibetan soul the right amount of respect, combined with a firm hand, lack of prestige and a sense of humor.
  • will stay in touch with kennel Bod Khyi through good and bad times.
  • follows the recommended vaccination schedule, Carries out health checks and keeps the dog insured.
  • has already been in contact with, or lived with, a TM.

For those living far away, there is a network of TM owners who welcome visits. They are an extended arm of the kennel and are fully trusted.

Apart from this, there are no demands. Once the puppy has been purchased, the dog belongs to its new owner.

Contact is always welcome, whether the matter is big or small. Updates about the puppies in photo or text are  greatly appreciated.

Buyers are welcomed to a closed Bod Khyi group on Fb

be careful when buying a puppy

The parents must have a known identity, registration number and health status with regard to hips, elbows and eyes. Healthy hips are graded A and B. In exceptional cases, C can be used. Anything worse than C is considered unhealthy hips. Grade 2 and higher is considered an unhealthy elbow.

The puppy’s mother should be seen in real life a the breeders

A visit to the breeder’s home should be made to meet the puppy there. If living abroad a live streaming should be able to arrange.

Safest option is to buy a puppy from a breeder affiliated with a FCI club as Swedish Kennel Club (SKK). Swedish breeders with planned or born litters can be found at www.kopahund.se.
The TM club recommends stricter health requirements than SKK, so carefully check which requirements the breeder follows.

Warning! Puppies are being smuggled in and scammers are working in dogtrading. That brings great uncertainty regarding purity of breed, temperament and health.

Make sure to meet not just one, but several Tibetan Mastiffs to see if this is the right breed

You can count on Bod Khyi

Once it has been confirmed that there is a puppy for you, an expectations document will be sent. It explains what to expect when buying a TM in general, and from this breeder and the current combination in particular. As a buyer, there is a duty to investigate. The document is a guide along the way. The document is signed when collecting the puppy.

The puppy is delivered in accordance with the Swedish Kennel Club’s (SKK) regulations. It has been examined by a veterinarian, ID-marked and vaccinated.

The puppy comes with a collar and a blanket that smells like home.

The puppy comes with some of the food it has been eating and instructions regarding diet and vaccinations.

Information is provided about the puppy’s upbringing and behaviour in the litter, as well as information about the puppy’s relatives and about the breed in general. Frequent during the first three years.

A total of 1,500 SEK is refunded against receipt when hip and elbow X-rays (HD and ED) have been carried out, read and registered at the Swedish, Norwegian or Finnish Kennel Club at one and the same occasion. (These are kennelclubs with open pedigree & healthregister). This applies between the dog’s 1st and 3rd birthday. Receipt must be submitted.

If it works out practically and time allows, a mental description (MH) for the litter is offered together with the other puppies in the litter at a course in Enköping. Around 1.5-3 years age.

Support is provided over phone and email.

The puppies are insured until the take off from the kennel.

If any veterinarian-confirmed health issues become known in the litter, all puppy buyers are informed.

For foreign buyers, any additional costs related to export, such as extra veterinary procedures, vaccinations, crate and transport costs, etc., are paid by the buyer.

this is how the purchase works

All puppy buyers have described their expectations regarding the puppy’s use, behaviour and appearance.
When the puppies are 5–7 weeks old, a decision is made about which puppy will be kept, and the remaining puppies are then allocated to the buyers based on experience of the puppies as individuals and inspired by the buyers’ wishes. As soon as the puppies are born, it is announced whether there is a male or female puppy available to buy.

Most likely, by the time the puppies are 5–6 weeks old, there has already been a visit to the kennel and the puppy room. It gives buyers an opportunity to see how the puppies behave. At that point, a first, second and third choice is often made.

When puppies are around 5-7 weeks you know for sure which one of them will be yours.

During the puppies’ upbringing at the kennel, regular updates are provided in text and pictures.

Payment for the puppy is made by depositing the amount into the account,  visible no later than two days before picking up the puppy (this allows a margin in case anything goes wrong in bank), or by paying with Swish or in cash in SEK at the time you fetch your puppy. A puppy that has not been paid for does not leave the kennel.

In that case, the buyer has broken the agreement and no longer has a promise of a puppy. Deposite will not be refunded.

If the puppy get a remark on last vet-check it is the buyers decision to stop the purchase or not. If the purchase is stopped the deposit is payed back.
